1984 stand above all the artist scene of the GDR under observation for the state security service. As completely particularly regime-faithful, successful Scharfmacher thereby state security service captain shows itself Gerd Wiesler (Ulrich trouble). It is exactly therefore set by lieutenant colonel Anton Grubitz (Ulrich Tukur) on the prominent dramatist George Dreyman (Sebastian cook), which actually arranged itself with the regime so far completely well, whose beautiful life companion Christa Maria they country (Martina cover) is desired in addition, by culture Minister Bruno Hempf (Sebastian Thieme). But the usual play entgleitet the otherwise so ice-cold, abgebrühten state security service officer; slowly, nearly imperceptibly he becomes sensitive to what he gets with this hearing action to hearing and to seeing.
