The movie takes place in 1988, one year after the events of the first film, and Murtaugh (Glover) and Riggs (Gibson) have become virtually inseparable. Riggs spends much of his time with Murtaugh's family, while Murtaugh is contemplating retirement. There is also a subplot about Murtaugh's daughter, Rianne, beginning her acting career in a condom commercial, much to his chagrin.
