The story follows a meek man (Chris Cooper) who falls for a beautiful, younger woman (Rachel McAdams). His main obstacles are his good friend (Pierce Brosnan) with an equally strong attraction to her and his controlling wife (Patricia Clarkson), whom he'd like to spare the agony of divorce by poisoning her.
