An imaginative ten-year old, simply called Max (Cayden Boyd), living in Texas, is bullied regularly at school. Dissatisfied and lonely, he creates an amazing dreamworld called planet Drool where endless fun and brilliant dreaming are the norm. He creates two young warriors, Sharkboy (Taylor Lautner) and Lavagirl (Taylor Dooley). Many of the other inhabitants of this world are people from Max's own life, including the two main villains, one of which is Mr. Electric (George Lopez) who initially helps run the planet.
Sharkboy was raised by sharks after his father's floating laboratory was destroyed in a storm. Later, Sharkboy and Lavagirl met Max and promised to return one day. When Max reads this story from his dream journal to his class, no one is at all kind to him, except Marissa (Sasha Pieterse), the daughter of the Teacher, Mr. Electricidad. An overprotective father, Mr Electricidad does not want Max to befriend her, although he suggests that Max attempt to make friends in his real world, so as to distract himself from dreaming. Later, a bully, Linus (Jacob Davich), steals and vandalizes Max's Dream Journal. Max comes home to his well-meaning but arguing parents (David Arquette and Kristin Davis).
